OK, I wouldn't put this on FaceBook or anything, but since we're among family I'm going to take a moment to brag....
Louis and I had our first conference with John's teacher. It was the best conference ever! It started out with her telling us how much she adores John. She went on telling us that she loves his energy, excitement and the way he views the world. He's a good friend and he's making good friends. She also told us that he is one of the best listeners in class right now. He loves listening to stories and sharing his ideas in class. He also notices every detail in class and has an amazing memory. He loves reading and loves books. They have flashcards that they bring home every week starting with letter sounds, blends and then sight words. The first week John brought home a list with a card saying he passed lists 1-6, he needed to work on the "th" sound. We practiced, he went back to school and I didn't hear anything more. Last night she showed us his next certificate, he passed lists 7-30! In one sitting he finished all the flashcards! He knew all the sight words they showed him! She told us that she was going to speak with the first grade teachers to see if he can come in their classrooms for reading groups, about a half an hour a day. He's also doing well in the math skills they are working on. He's also enjoyed reading out loud to some of the kids when they finish their work early. She also showed us some work samples and he usually writes her little notes on the backs. This last month's writing sample was suppose to be about apples. He told her that he doesn't like apples and asked if he could write about bananas. She asked him to choose a favorite apple color then. Well he wrote, among other things not having to do with apples, "I only like grapes and bananas" :) Another one he wrote "Dear Mrs. Sever, You are the best teacher ever! Love, John"
Some areas that she said he could work on is staying on topic when he writes, he still usually writes what HE wants to write about. Using the right pencil grip and correct letter formation.
He's having a great year so far! What a great way to start off his school years. We shared with her just how much he adores her and Mrs. Sever's word is law in his world. He wrote her a note today "Dear Mrs. Sever, I love you. Do you love me? Love, John" and he put it in an envelope with a lollipop. We just couldn't be more pleased, proud and excited about Kindergarten. It's so nice knowing John's going to a happy place everyday that he just adores. Being away from him for 6.5 hours a day has been tough, this makes the whole thing much easier :)
OK, I'm done with my bragging now :)
