We Have a Chrysalis!!

Here it is!! So exciting! I did my routine check outside as I went to the kitchen and WOW! I am so excited! I wish I could have seen it, but it was amazing enough seeing the finished chrysalis! It's such a pretty color green, just like the leaves of the milkweed plant. John was amazed too. I took him out to see it. He liked that the caterpillars were in a "J" shape like his name. He asked where the caterpillar went. He's excited to see a butterfly now. It looks like we have a week or so until then.
Here's another view with more of the plant too. It really does blend in nicely. Our milkweed is starting to bloom too, perfect for when our little butterfly emerges.
I wondered if the skin was on the ground and sure enough I found it. It was hard to capture in a picture, but the skin was amazing. It looked like a discarded sock, like the caterpillar literally shimmied out of it as it became a chrysalis. It still has the antennae and the face intact.

What a great project this has been! I can't wait to do this again as the kids get older. Maybe next year we'll have our own eggs on our plant, the second generation :) At least if we don't, we know where to go. Paulette has a very successful butterfly nursery next door!
